Level 2 Sports Trainer Course and Accreditation

SASMA’s Level 2 Sports Trainer Course is designed to further the skills and knowledge of existing Level 1 Sports Trainers. The two-day Level 2 Course expands on components learned in the Level 1 Course, as well as introducing new topics and practical skills, candidates must also outline their industry experience and ongoing education to be eligible for a Level 2 Accreditation.  This professional development could be gained from the SASMA State conference, SASMA workshops, club events also. The Level 2 Course is delivered by a range of experienced Sports Trainers as well as Sports Medicine Professionals who present key components of the course.

On successful completion of the course, attendees are issued a three-year Level 2 Sports Trainers Accreditation.

Pre-Requisites

  • Current Level 1 Accredited Sports Trainer
  • Evidence of 50 hours (or 12 months) working as a Level 1 Trainer.
  • Must provide a current copy of First Aid (HLTAID011) and CPR (HLTAID009) Certificates
  • Complete Sports Integrity Australia online modules:
    • Harassment and Discrimination
    • Safeguarding Children and Young People
  • Complete Asthma First Aid in Sport online course.

Course Structure

In addition to the pre-requisites, you must attend each component of the two-day course and complete all practical components successfully to receive your Level 2 Accreditation.

Attendance of the course alone does not grant accreditation; you must have completed all components to gain your Level 2 Accreditation.

Applicants looking to attend a Level 2 Course that have an expired Level 1 Accreditation are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Generally, if you can outline your sports trainer work (verified by your club), ongoing education, and practical competency have been maintained since your accreditation has lapsed, your entry to the course may be considered. We encourage you to bring a pen, any food and beverage (nibbles and basic tea and coffee provided), as well as dress appropriately for practical components.

Yes, you can complete these post-courses, you will not however finalise your Accreditation and receive your certificate until all requirements are completed.

Many of the components of the Level 2 Course are practical, including;

  • Sports Massage, practicing the skills of massage, generally in pairs.
  • Sports Taping, practicing the skills of knee, shoulder, foot, elbow taping, generally in pairs.
  • Advanced Wound Care, using various wound dressings, solutions.
  • Spinal Management, stretcher work, role playing, manual handling.

Upon registering for the Level 2 Course, you will receive your SASMA member code, log on instructions as well as further details on accessing the member portal for document/CPD upload upon registering for the course.

SASMA Accreditations are valid for 3-years, following this, you will be required to complete the reaccreditation process to maintain your current accreditation.

We strongly recommend that clubs only engage those who have fully completed a sports trainer course and have received their accreditation. This is for the protection of both yourself, the club and the players you are managing.
