Level 1 Sports Trainer Course
Level 1 Sports Trainer Course and Accreditation
SASMA’s Level 1 Sports Trainer Course is aimed to introduce the participant to the role of the Sports Trainer, as well as providing basic knowledge on injury prevention and management principles, wound care, soft/hard tissue injuries, concussion, spinal injuries, and much more.
Attendees are also taught, and assessed on, the practical skills of taping an ankle, thumb and fingers, transporting an injured athlete via stretcher, as well as on field injury scenarios.
The Level 1 Course is delivered by an experienced educator who often is also a Sports Trainer, as well as Sports Medicine Professionals – Doctors and Physiotherapists – who present key components of the course.
On successful completion of the course, attendees are issued a three-year Level 1 Sports Trainers Accreditation.
Pre-Requisites
- Must be 16 years of age to receive Level 1 Accreditation
- Must provide a current copy of First Aid (HLTAID011) and CPR (HLTAID009) Certificates
Course Structure
In addition to the pre-requisites, the course includes two elements you must complete to receive your accreditation.
- Online Component – access link sent upon registration; this must be completed prior to your course date. Includes assessment. Please allow 2-3 total hours to complete.
- Attend full day face to face workshop and complete all practical components successfully.
Attendance of the course alone does not grant accreditation; you must have completed all components to gain your Level 1 Accreditation.

We encourage you to bring a pen, any food and drinks (nibbles and basic tea and coffee provided), as well as dress appropriately for practical components.
Yes, you can complete these post-courses, however you cannot finalise your Accreditation and receive your certificate until completed and uploaded to your membership profile for review. Contact to advise the office when you have completed this.
The online component access link is sent upon registration for the course, this generally takes 2-3 hours total, but can be completed at your own pace, meaning you do not have to complete it all in one sitting.
When you turn 16, contact the office and they can then issue you with your Accreditation.
The practical components of the Level 1 Course are – injury scenarios, working with a small group on specific injuries, may involve acting out an injury/sports trainer response, and presenting to the group/assessor. Transporting an injured athlete via stretcher, generally groups of 6-8, each trainer must play the role of the head trainer, as well as assisting/role playing throughout. Practical taping of the ankle, fingers and thumb, generally done in pairs.
Similar to the online component, you will receive a SASMA member code, log on instructions as well as further details on accessing the member portal for document/CPD upload upon registering for the course.
SASMA Accreditations are valid for 3-years, following this, you will be required to complete the reaccreditation process to maintain your current accreditation.
We strongly recommend that clubs only engage those who have fully completed a sports trainer course and have received their accreditation. This is for the protection of both yourself, the club and the players you are managing.
